Bio
Recruited from the amateur ranks at Caulfield Grammarians, George Cassidy was a versatile ruck and half-forward whose arrival at Melbourne involved a minor administrative skirmish. While he had already established himself as a star in the amateurs, the Demons were forced to fight for his clearance after it was discovered he had resided within St Kilda's recruitment zone for the previous three years. Once cleared to play midway through the 1929 season, Cassidy made an immediate impact by booting two goals on debut against Essendon. However, his senior opportunities proved sporadic, and a broken ankle sustained in 1930 further derailed his momentum at the top level. Unable to cement a regular spot in the senior side, he eventually departed on a high note, kicking the opening goal in Melbourne’s 1931 Seconds premiership victory before returning to Caulfield to continue a decorated amateur career.
