George Finegan

Hailing from the Sale Football Club in Gippsland, George Finegan was a powerfully built key defender who was granted a brief opportunity at VFL level with Geelong in the late 1950s. At 183cm and 93kg, he possessed a formidable frame for the era, ideally suited to wrestling with the competition's strongest full-forwards in one-on-one contests. He arrived at Kardinia Park for the 1958 season but found it difficult to break into the senior side consistently, managing just four games in the hoops before his tenure at the top level concluded. While his VFL career was short-lived, Finegan remained a celebrated figure in country football, later being named at full-back in Sale's Team of the Decade for the 1950s alongside future St Kilda premiership hero Alan Morrow.
