Bio
Hailing from Casterton in Victoria's Western District, George "Leather" Gill was a tough country recruit who arrived at Geelong after captaining his hometown club to a premiership in 1914. His time in the VFL was limited to seven senior appearances during the 1915 season, a year heavily impacted by the First World War, after which the club temporarily withdrew from the competition. Rather than resuming his league career when normal fixtures returned, Gill moved back to the Western District where he became a pioneering figure, reputed to be Casterton's first paid coach and guiding the local "Federals" team to three premierships in the 1920s. He left a significant legacy through his footballing family; his brother Frank became a Carlton premiership captain and Hall of Famer, while his son Pat and nephews John and Barry also played VFL football.
