A product of the amateur ranks, George Gordon was a diminutive defender recruited to Fitzroy from the Old Brighton Grammarians. Born and bred in Brighton, he struggled to establish himself in the senior lineup during his initial years at Brunswick Street, managing just six appearances in his debut season and missing the entire 1925 campaign. It wasn't until 1927 that the back pocket finally cemented his place in the side, playing 16 games and proving his durability in a tough era. His most notable moment that season involved a tribunal skirmish where he was on the receiving end of a kick from Richmond enforcer George Rudolph, an incident that highlighted the physical toll of his defensive duties. Despite finally breaking through as a regular player, Gordon's VFL career concluded at the end of that season, leaving him as a reliable backman who never troubled the scorers.
