Bio
Recruited from local club St Monica’s CYMS, George Hassell was a polished left-footed wingman who played a vital role during a golden era at Windy Hill. He enjoyed a dream debut season in 1946, winning Essendon's Best First Year Player award and starring on the wing in the premiership victory over Melbourne. Renowned for his precise kicking and elite delivery into the forward line, Hassell played in four consecutive Grand Finals from 1946 to 1949, earning a second flag as a reserve in the 1949 triumph over Carlton. Despite missing significant time in 1947 due to a thigh injury, his consistent form was recognised with state selection for Victoria in 1948. After five successful seasons and two premierships, he left the VFL to become captain-coach of Cornwall in Northern Tasmania.
