Recruited from Rushworth in the Goulburn Valley, George Hawking was a tall key position prospect who made a brief foray into VFL football during the 1927 season. Standing 185cm—a significant height for the era—he was the nephew of former South Melbourne player Tom Hawking and arrived at Princes Park with a reputation as a strong mark. He managed three goals across his four senior appearances but ultimately did not settle in the city, promptly returning to Rushworth where he re-established himself as a local star.
