Bio
Recruited from West Broken Hill amid a storm of publicity and a protracted clearance dispute with South Australian officials, George Lakes arrived at Melbourne with a reputation as one of the most talented young footballers in the country. Born into a Greek family (originally Theodoroulakes), he was a highly sought-after utility who cost the Demons a significant transfer fee, but his time at the MCG was ultimately defined by misfortune rather than the brilliance he displayed as a junior. While he possessed the size and skill to hold down a key post or play through the centre, chronic knee injuries severely hampered his continuity, restricting him to sporadic appearances over five seasons. After struggling to cement a permanent spot in the Melbourne lineup and famously enduring abuse from a spectator while being stretchered off in 1969, he was cleared to South Melbourne midway through the 1972 season. Lakes managed just half a dozen games for the Swans before his physical battles forced him out of the league entirely, leaving him to pursue a successful post-football career in sports medicine.
