Bio
A barrel-chested workhorse recruited from Richmond's VFA side, George 'Mallee' Johnson became the heartbeat of Carlton's historic first hat-trick of premierships. Already a standout in the Association, Johnson joined the Blues in 1905 and established himself as a tireless follower who, despite standing only 179cm, fearlessly competed in the ruck against taller timber. His lion-hearted performance in the 1907 Grand Final, where he shouldered the ruck duties almost single-handedly in the absence of key big men, remains part of club folklore. A fierce loyalist to revolutionary coach Jack Worrall, Johnson was a central figure in the 1906, 1907, and 1908 flags before controversially quitting the club in 1909 in solidarity with his ousted mentor. He returned to the VFA and immediately featured in North Melbourne's 1910 premiership side, cementing his reputation as a serial winner across both competitions.
