Bio
Originally from South Yarra, George McLeod began his journey as a foundation player for St Kilda in the VFL's inaugural 1897 season, though his early career was punctuated by a departure and a brief return to the Junction Oval in 1901. He subsequently established himself in Tasmanian football, starring for the Railway club in the Lyell District and representing the state at the 1908 Melbourne Carnival. McLeod returned to the VFL as a hardened mature-age recruit for Essendon in 1910, reinventing himself as a rugged utility capable of playing as a follower or in defence. A self-described battler rather than a stylist, he proved invaluable during the club's golden era, most notably stepping up to replace injured captain Allan Belcher in the ruck for the 1911 premiership win before collecting a second flag as a back pocket in 1912.
