Bio
Recruited as a mature-age prospect from the Bendigo goldfields, George McWilliam arrived at Fitzroy in 1907 already established as a premier country footballer. A chemist by trade and the captain of Eaglehawk, he played three seasons of VFL football in his late twenties and early thirties, operating primarily as a centreman and ruck-rover. Despite his short tenure in the league, his quality was evident, though professional and geographical ties eventually drew him back to the Bendigo district where he resumed his dominance as a local captain. He is remembered as a member of Eaglehawkâs Team of the Century and later served as a Staff Sergeant with the Australian Camel Brigade during World War I.
