Recruited from Elsternwick, George Parkinson was a backman who managed a brief stint with Essendon in the years immediately preceding the Great War. He broke into the senior side in 1913, featuring seven times in his debut season and adding another two appearances the following year before his VFL career was effectively curtailed by global events. Parkinson enlisted in the AIF in mid-1915, serving overseas in Egypt and England for the duration of the conflict.
