A mature-age recruit from Kerang, George Simmonds arrived at the Melbourne Football Club in 1924 carrying a formidable reputation as a country goal-kicker. The Demons brought the 28-year-old forward to the city in hopes of bolstering their attack, and he was immediately slotted into the senior side for the opening round of the season. Simmonds showed glimpses of his scoring ability by booting four goals across his four appearances, but he struggled to translate his rural dominance to the increased pace of VFL football. Unable to secure a permanent place in the lineup, he departed the club after just one season to return to country football with South Ballarat and later Murtoa.
