Recruited from Eaglehawk in the Bendigo District Football League, George Stewart was a pacy wingman and rover granted a brief trial with Carlton at the beginning of the 1909 season. Arriving at Princes Park during a turbulent period that coincided with the internal conflicts leading to coach Jack Worrall's resignation, Stewart debuted in the opening round against University but struggled to impact the contest across his two senior appearances. Distinctively, he managed to juggle his VFL duties with his country commitments, reportedly playing midweek matches for Eaglehawk while briefly holding his spot in the city. Unable to retain his place in a Carlton side still laden with premiership talent, he quickly returned to the Bendigo region where he resumed his trade as a butcher and served for many years as a prominent member of the Eaglehawk Fire Brigade.
