Bio
A teenage prodigy from Tasmania, George Vautin arrived at Essendon as an established star and became one of the most decorated players of the pre-VFL era. First noted for his brilliance with City FC in Hobart, where he played senior football at just 13, he was recruited by the Same Olds after impressing in representative matches against Victoria. Vautin immediately became a linchpin of Essendon's dominant 1890s dynasty, featuring in three consecutive VFA premierships and winning the prestigious Champion of the Colony award in 1895—the equivalent of a pre-VFL Brownlow Medal. A small, elusive rover and forward renowned for his "dodging wizardry" and clever ball use, he transitioned seamlessly into the newly formed VFL in 1897. He capped his illustrious tenure by playing in Essendon's inaugural VFL premiership side before retiring midway through the following season, leaving a legacy as one of the code's first true interstate imports to conquer Melbourne football.
