Bio
A seasoned Tasmanian journeyman by the time the VFL was formed, George Williamson brought a wealth of VFA experience to South Melbourne's inaugural lineup. After stints with Williamstown—where he departed following a controversial bribery accusation—Footscray, and St Kilda, the key defender arrived at Lake Oval in 1895. A natural leader stationed at centre half-back, Williamson skippered South Melbourne during their final VFA campaign in 1896, notably leading the side in the famous premiership playoff loss to Collingwood. Already 31 years old when the new league launched in 1897, he played just a dozen games at the elite level over two seasons before clearing to Albert Park to finish his career in the juniors.
