Stats
Bio
Recruited from the lecture halls of Melbourne University, Gerald Johnston earned his place in the senior side during the tumultuous 1914 season. Making his debut in Round 6, he became a regular fixture in the "Students" lineup during what would ultimately prove to be the club's final year in the VFL. With the team enduring a winless campaign and the outbreak of World War I decimating the playing list, Johnston’s career was inextricably linked to the club's rapid decline and subsequent dissolution. He played 11 games without registering a goal, battling against the odds in a side that was often outmatched by its professional rivals. Unlike some of his teammates who scattered to other league clubs after the hostilities, Johnston’s time at the elite level concluded when University withdrew from the competition.
