Recruited from local club Ashburton YCW, Gerald McCarthy was a tall key position player who made his name as a versatile defender during a golden era for Hawthorn. Standing at 191cm, he possessed the size to man the key defensive posts but also had the utility value to swing forward when required. Despite being a regular fixture in the senior side, McCarthy's time at Glenferrie Oval was defined by agonizing timing; he played in five finals matches but suffered the heartbreak of being omitted from the Grand Final teams in both 1975 and 1976, missing out on the club's premiership triumph by the narrowest of margins.

At the end of the 1977 season, McCarthy was central to one of the decade's most significant recruiting moves, traded to Fitzroy in exchange for a young Terry Wallace. While the deal is often remembered for Wallace's subsequent rise, McCarthy provided immediate and consistent value to the Lions, missing only two games in his first two seasons at the Junction Oval. He became a defensive anchor for Fitzroy during their resurgence in the late 70s and played a key role in their 1979 finals campaign. In a remarkable statistical quirk, he retired in 1982 with exactly 150 games to his name—split precisely into 75 games for Hawthorn and 75 for Fitzroy.
