Bio
A nomadic defender whose top-level career was fleeting, Gerry Beare found his true calling as a dominant figure in country football. An Old Xavier College student recruited from Rochester, he made two senior appearances for Richmond in 1924 before departing the VFL to pursue opportunities in the bush. This move proved prolific, as Beare became a serial winner in regional Victoria, captain-coaching premiership sides at Port Fairy, South Ballarat, and Watchem—where he also claimed a league Best and Fairest—in consecutive seasons. He returned to the big league with Melbourne in 1928, adding two games in the back pocket to his tally, but was unable to cement a long-term position in the side. Beare eventually resumed his journey as a football missionary, coaching clubs across Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland for another decade.
