Recruited from Warragul in Hawthorn's Gippsland zone, Gerry Lynn was a talented rover whose VFL opportunities were limited by the immense depth of the Hawks' 1970s dynasty. He broke into the senior side for his debut in 1974 and proved to be a dominant force at the lower level, finishing runner-up in the 1975 Gardiner Medal for the reserves competition. However, with his path to the senior midfield blocked by legends like Leigh Matthews and Michael Tuck, Lynn managed just three senior appearances across two seasons before departing Glenferrie Oval. His life ended tragically in 1992 when he was killed in a light plane crash in regional Victoria at the age of 36.
