Bio
Born in Sydney but recruited locally from South Yarra, Gerry Matheson entered the VFL orbit via a personal recommendation from Melbourne legend Ivor Warne-Smith, who brought him to the Demons for the 1926 pre-season. Despite this high-profile endorsement, Matheson found himself stuck in the Melbourne reserves for two years, unable to break into a formidable senior side that was building toward a premiership dynasty. Seeking a pathway to senior football, the forward transferred to Footscray early in the 1928 season, earning his debut in Round 2 and retaining his place for the remainder of the year. He proved to be a handy acquisition for the Tricolours, booting 13 goals in 16 games as a regular fixture in the attacking half. Although his top-level career was confined to that single season, Matheson later served with the Australian Army for five years during the Second World War.
