Recruited from St Thomas CBC in Clifton Hill, Gerry Sier entered the VFL system as a teenager, joining the Fitzroy reserves at just 16 years of age. The younger brother of Maroons premiership star Ken Sier, he developed into a reliable half-back flanker who finally broke into the senior side in 1948. After two seasons at the Brunswick Street Oval, Sier crossed to Richmond in 1950, reuniting with Ken who had made the same switch two years earlier. He played seven games for the Tigers in his solitary season at Punt Road before leaving the VFL to pursue coaching opportunities in country Victoria, eventually leading St Arnaud and Yarragon.
