Bio
Recruited from Coorparoo in Queensland—a relatively untapped talent pool for the VFL in the 1970s—Scanlon joined a formidable North Melbourne outfit during their golden era under Ron Barassi. He managed to break into the senior lineup for the opening four rounds of the historic 1977 season, playing as a mid-sized utility in a team destined for premiership glory. Unable to hold his spot in a squad boasting the likes of Malcolm Blight and Barry Cable, he crossed to Footscray the following season in search of greater opportunity. He added a further five games and booted four goals as a half-forward for the Bulldogs, but his top-level career was ultimately brief, standing as an early example of the league scouting talent from the northern states.
