Bio
Gordon Dangerfield was a stalwart defender for St Kilda during the club’s challenging early decades, establishing himself as a reliable centre half-back known for his strong marking ability. Making his debut in 1905, his career had an unusual start, as he briefly left the VFL to join Brighton for their inaugural VFA season in 1908 before returning to the Saints to cement his spot in the side. He became a defensive pillar for the team, often tasked with repelling opposition attacks and acting as the general of the backline.
His leadership qualities were recognised with two separate stints as club captain in 1911 and 1915, a period that saw St Kilda reach its first-ever Grand Final in 1913. Dangerfield held down the key defensive post in that historic decider, though the Saints ultimately fell to Fitzroy. His career was interrupted when St Kilda went into recess during the First World War, but he returned to play two final seasons when the club resumed operations in 1918. After 158 games at the top level, he departed in 1920 to return to Brighton, where he eventually took on the role of coach.
