Bio
Born into a footballing family, Gordon Hellwig was the son of former Collingwood and Carlton player Herman Hellwig. He made his way to Fitzroy in 1925, establishing himself as a versatile key position utility capable of patrolling centre half-back or drifting forward to impact the scoreboard. After four seasons and 51 games at Brunswick Street, Hellwig crossed to the VFA to join Williamstown in 1929, where he became a pivotal leader for the Seagulls. He captained the club and briefly served as captain-coach, but his career was cut short in unfortunate circumstances when he suffered a severe knee injury during a charity match against a VFL representative side in 1932.
