Stats
Bio
Recruited from Maryborough after winning the Donald Gift sprint, Gordon Jones was a mobile big man who overcame a baptism of fire to become a dual premiership defender. His career began disastrously when he conceded 12 goals to Essendon forward Ted Freyer in his debut, and his rookie season was further marred by a broken leg. Jones eventually found his niche as a dashing centre half-back, where his recovery pace and aerial ability made him a fixture of the Demons' defence. He enjoyed a breakout season in 1938, earning selection for Victoria and polling the most Brownlow Medal votes of any Melbourne player, before cementing his legacy as a key member of the 1939 and 1940 premiership sides. His football journey was effectively ended by the Second World War, as he enlisted for military service following the 1940 Grand Final and did not return to the VFL.
