Bio
Recruited from Warburton-Millgrove in the Yarra Valley, Gordon Sumner entered the VFL with a debut performance that instantly entered Collingwood folklore. Given his opportunity in Round 5, 1985 against the Sydney Swans, the ball-winning midfielder amassed 29 disposals and was named best-on-ground, a display so dominant that breathless media reports immediately flagged him as a future star. He played out the remainder of the season as a consistent contributor, but the initial hysteria proved difficult to live up to. After managing just eight games early in the 1986 season, Sumner walked away from the top level, frankly admitting that he lacked the singular obsession required for VFL football, and returned to the country leagues where he later served as a coach.
