Family

Hailing from a rich footballing dynasty as the nephew of Melbourne triple-premiership star Syd Anderson, Graeme Anderson was a standout product of the Port Melbourne VFA factory who joined Collingwood only after South Melbourne passed on their residential claim. A silky, balanced half-forward capable of rotating through the midfield or wing, he was renowned for his elusive movement, innate goal sense, and a damaging torpedo punt. Anderson became a dangerous attacking weapon for the Magpies during the late 1970s, famously booting eight goals against Essendon and playing in the club’s heartbreaking 1977 and 1979 Grand Final defeats. His time at the elite level ended prematurely when a disputed transfer fee blocked a move to Essendon, resulting in a return to the Borough where he cemented his local legend status with further premiership success.
