Bio
Recruited from South Melbourne Districts, Graeme Atkins was a clever rover who established himself at North Melbourne as a teenager in the early 1980s. Standing at just 178cm, he relied on agility and ball-winning ability to impact contests, enjoying a strong 1986 campaign where he played 19 games and polled Brownlow votes. His career trajectory took a dramatic turn early in the 1987 season when he famously stood down from football to force a clearance to Collingwood, eventually securing a mid-season move to Victoria Park. While he immediately slotted into the Magpies' midfield for 18 games that year, his time in black and white was ultimately defined by misfortune. A severe knee injury restricted him to just three appearances over the next two seasons, forcing him into a premature retirement at age 25 and leaving fans to wonder what he might have achieved in his prime.
