Bio
Recruited from Redan in the Ballarat Football League, Graeme Gellie produced one of the most impressive debut seasons in St Kilda history before injury cruelly intervened. A sharp and industrious rover, he immediately became a central figure in the Saints' midfield, winning the club’s Best and Fairest award in his first year (1978)—a rare feat that signaled a bright future. However, a severe knee injury early in 1979 effectively derailed his playing career, limiting him to sporadic appearances over the next few seasons as he battled to get his body right. Although he was forced into premature retirement, his tactical acumen remained highly valued at Moorabbin, and he transitioned directly into a leadership role, eventually taking over as St Kilda's senior coach midway through the 1984 season.
