Bio
Recruited from Wesley College, Graeme Johnston was a speedy half-forward who progressed through the under-19s before making his senior debut during Essendon’s golden run of the 1960s. Although he often battled for consistency and found himself on the fringe of selection—playing just 71 games over six seasons—his timing was impeccable when it mattered most. He cemented his place in club history as a dual premiership player, lining up on a half-forward flank in the Bombers' 1962 triumph over Carlton and the 1965 victory against St Kilda. A reliable role player known more for his serviceability and pace than high possession counts, Johnston left the VFL at just 25 to join Preston in the VFA, where he immediately played in another premiership side in 1968. He maintained a strong connection to the Bombers long after his retirement, eventually returning to Windy Hill to serve as the Chairman of Selectors in the early 1990s.
