Bio
Recruited from Edenhope in Victoria's Western District, Graeme MacKenzie arrived at Fitzroy in the mid-1950s and quickly established himself as a mainstay of the Lions' defence. Standing at 175cm, he found his niche in the back pocket, where his close-checking style and reliability made him a first-choice defender for seven seasons. He wasted no time making an impact, debuting in the opening round of 1956 and kicking his solitary career goal the very next week against Essendon.
MacKenzie was a consistent performer during a competitive era for the club, featuring in three finals campaigns and playing a key role in Fitzroy's 1959 Night Series premiership victory. His quality as a defender was recognised by the umpires, polling 19 Brownlow Medal votes over his career—a solid return for a backman of his time. He departed the VFL in 1962 as a 100-game player, remembered as a dependable servant of the club who wore the number 29 guernsey with distinction.
