Bio
Recruited from Croydon, Graeme McArthur arrived at Glenferrie Oval during the club’s first golden era, joining his older brother John on the Hawthorn list. A diminutive operator standing just 177cm, McArthur faced an immense challenge breaking into a side that had won the 1961 flag and was marching toward another Grand Final appearance in 1963. He managed to break through for a solitary game in his debut season, notably wearing the number 50 guernsey—a number that would famously remain dormant at the club for 48 years until it was finally dusted off in 2011. After adding just one more senior game in 1964, McArthur’s brief VFL career concluded, a victim of the fierce competition for spots in a powerhouse Hawks lineup.
