Arriving at North Melbourne as a decorated mature-age recruit, Graeme Melrose had already established himself as a star in the WAFL, highlighted by a Sandover Medal victory with East Fremantle in 1974. His move to Victoria in 1975 was part of the Kangaroos' aggressive recruiting drive under Ron Barassi, and the classy rover and half-forward immediately proved his worth at VFL level. Melrose was renowned for his goal sense and ability to read the play, managing to boot 138 goals across his five seasons at Arden Street while providing essential support to a star-studded midfield brigade.

Despite being a consistent performer during North Melbourne's most successful era, Melrose endured a bittersweet relationship with finals football. He played in the losing Grand Final sides of 1976 and 1978 but missed out on selection for the club's premiership triumphs in 1975 and 1977. Regardless of the missing silverware, he remained a fixture of the starting 18 throughout the late 1970s, playing 111 games in just five years before retiring from the VFL at the conclusion of the 1979 season.
