Recruited from Charlton, Graham Teasdale began his VFL career as a promising forward at Richmond before becoming the centrepiece of one of the most lopsided trades in football history. Struggling to break into the Tigers' senior side regularly, he was packaged with Brian Roberts and Francis Jackson and sent to South Melbourne in 1975 to satisfy Richmond’s desperation for John Pitura. The move proved to be a masterstroke for South; while Pitura floundered at Punt Road, Teasdale flourished at the Lake Oval, initially as a high-marking forward who could kick bags of goals.

His career trajectory changed forever in 1977 when coach Ian Stewart moved him into the ruck. Possessing an enormous aerobic tank and the agility of a smaller man, Teasdale dominated the ground as a ruck-rover, racking up disposals at will. He capped off that season by winning the Brownlow Medal with a record-breaking vote tally under the dual-umpire system, accepting the award in a now-famous velvet suit. Despite his brilliance at South, the club's relocation turmoil saw him force a trade to Collingwood in 1982, but chronic knee injuries restricted his output and forced him into premature retirement.
