Bio
Recruited from Trinity Grammar, Grant Fowler began his VFL career with Fitzroy in 1976, where he established himself as a competent rover and handy goal-kicker over four seasons. Despite showing promise at the Lions, his career truly gained traction after crossing to Essendon in 1980. At Windy Hill, Fowler became a regular senior player, using his goal sense to support the Bombers' attack during the early years of the Kevin Sheedy era. His time at Essendon was highlighted by a strong performance in the 1981 Night Premiership, where he booted two goals in the club’s victory over Carlton.
Fowler's career took an unusual turn in 1983 when work commitments forced him into semi-retirement, limiting his appearances for the Bombers. In a rare mid-season move, he was cleared to Hawthorn later that year, becoming the first player since the 1940s to represent two other league clubs before donning the brown and gold. He made his Hawks debut against his former side, Essendon, late in the 1983 season but struggled to break into a formidable Hawthorn lineup destined for back-to-back flags. Fowler added just one final senior game in 1984 to finish his career on exactly 100 VFL matches, retiring as a journeyman who played a role at three clubs without tasting the ultimate premiership success that surrounded him in his final years.
