Bio
Recruited from local club Sunshine, Grant Simmons was a towering 193cm ruckman and key position prospect who debuted for Footscray as an 18-year-old. Despite his imposing physical frame, which was significant for the era, Simmons faced the unenviable task of trying to break into a side that featured the legendary Gary Dempsey, the club’s dominant ruckman and eventual Brownlow Medallist. Consequently, Simmons found himself largely serving as a depth player, often deputising in the ruck or filling key defensive posts when required to cover injuries. His time at the Western Oval was punctuated by a season-long absence from senior football in 1972, and while he returned to add cover to the squad between 1973 and 1976, he struggled to cement a permanent spot in the senior 22, eventually departing the VFL after 30 games over seven seasons.
