Bio
Recruited from Norwood in the SANFL, Grant Tanner was a resilient utility whose short but impactful AFL career was defined by both his disciplined play and significant injury misfortune. After a false start with the inaugural Adelaide Crows squad where injury prevented a debut, Tanner found a lifeline at Geelong, quickly establishing himself in Malcolm Blight’s high-octane mid-90s system as a defensive midfielder capable of hitting the scoreboard. His tenure at Kardinia Park was a rollercoaster of September emotions; he heart-wrenchingly missed the 1994 Grand Final due to an ankle injury sustained in the finals series, but rebounded in 1995 to play a starring role—highlighted by a stunning five-goal haul in the Preliminary Final demolition of Richmond—before taking his place in the Grand Final loss to Carlton. A selfless team player who often performed the unglamorous tagging roles to allow more flashy teammates to shine, Tanner’s career was cruelly cut short by a ruptured ACL sustained late in 1997, forcing his retirement after missing the entire 1998 season.
