Bio
Recruited as a mature-age rookie after proving his credentials with a dominant Subiaco outfit in the WAFL, Greg Broughton was a classic example of persistence paying off. Selected by Fremantle with pick 73 in the 2009 Rookie Draft, he immediately translated his state league form to the AFL, cementing a spot in the Dockers' defence. A composed and prolific ball-winner, Broughton was best known for his ability to read the play across half-back and occasionally pinch-hit in the midfield, a versatile skill set that saw him finish third in the club's 2011 best and fairest count.
Despite his standing as a consistent performer in the West, Broughton surprisingly departed Fremantle at the end of 2012, traded to the Gold Coast Suns as the Dockers looked to ease salary cap pressure. He brought vital experience to the young Suns lineup, playing nearly every game in his first season in Queensland. However, injuries and the emergence of younger running defenders eventually limited his output. He retired at the end of 2015, remembered as a reliable utility who maximized his late start to carve out a respectable 110-game career.
