Recruited from Leitchville in northern Victoria, Greg Hardie was a diminutive rover who arrived at Princes Park with significant promise as a teenager. Handed the number 15 guernsey previously worn by club legend Bruce Comben, he made an immediate impact by booting three goals on debut against Fitzroy just weeks before his 18th birthday. A lively small forward and midfielder who possessed natural goal sense, Hardie followed up his maiden performance with a four-goal haul against South Melbourne, sparking hopes that the Blues had found a long-term crumbing option. However, he was unable to sustain that explosive early form, and after three seasons yielding 24 games, he departed the VFL system to return to country football in 1966.
