Bio
Recruited to Melbourne where he joined his older brother Gerard, Greg Healy developed into a courageous rover and on-baller known for his prolific goal-kicking ability. While Gerard eventually moved to Sydney to further his career, Greg remained a loyal one-club player, cementing his spot in the senior side with a playstyle defined by a high work rate and an uncanny knack for drifting forward to hit the scoreboard. His individual excellence was highlighted in 1986 when he won the Keith 'Bluey' Truscott Medal as the club's best and fairest, confirming his status as a premier midfielder of the competition who averaged well over a goal a game.
Healy's leadership qualities saw him appointed club captain in 1988, a role in which he led the Demons to their first Grand Final appearance since 1964. Although the team suffered a comprehensive loss to Hawthorn in the decider, Healy remained a vital figure in Melbourne's resurgence under coach John Northey, captaining the side until the end of 1990. Unfortunately, chronic knee issues plagued the latter stages of his career, limiting his durability and eventually forcing him to retire at the end of the 1993 season aged just 28.
