Bio
Arriving at Victoria Park in 1983 as the headline act of the club's ambitious "New Magpies" recruiting spree, Greg Phillips was already a defensive colossus in the SANFL who crossed the border to follow his mentor John Cahill. A physically imposing centre half-back, Phillips used his strength and superior reading of the play to dominate aerial contests, earning a reputation as a "safe pair of hands" who could repel opposition attacks with uncompromising physicality. Though he became a fan favourite at Collingwood for his reliability and leadership across four seasons, the premiership success he craved remained out of reach in the VFL. He eventually returned to South Australia to captain Port Adelaide and add to his staggering tally of eight SANFL premierships, securing his place in the Australian Football Hall of Fame, while his sporting legacy continued through his daughter, AFLW pioneer Erin Phillips.
