Teams

Born in Brighton East, Gus Howell was a journeyman footballer whose VFL career was bookended by a long stint in regional competitions. Originally recruited from VFA club Brighton, he managed a solitary senior appearance for St Kilda in 1921 before departing the league to play for Apollo Bay. Howell earned a second opportunity at the top level five years later with Footscray, where he added six games and two goals to his tally during the 1926 season. While his time in the VFL was brief, he established a lasting legacy in the Mornington Peninsula, serving as the senior coach of Chelsea for five consecutive seasons from 1932 to 1936.
