Stats
Bio
Recruited from the country town of Riddell, Tom Wellington arrived at Glenferrie Oval as a promising teenage prospect with the size to play key position football. Standing 187cm, he possessed a formidable frame for the era and was initially selected for a senior debut in late 1938 before illness forced his withdrawal. When he finally broke into the side in 1939, Hawthorn utilised his versatility to plug gaps at both ends of the ground, deploying him as a full-back to anchor the defence before swinging him forward to use his marking power as a target in attack. Despite showing the potential to become a long-term swingman for the club, his VFL career was brief, concluding after the 1940 season while he was still just 19 years old.
