Bio
Arriving at the Junction Oval in 1934 as a seasoned country footballer, Harold Gainger was a versatile big man recruited from the Western District town of Beeac. Having already served as captain-coach of Terang, he was comfortable in key positions, utilised by the Saints primarily at centre half-forward and occasionally in the ruck. His debut season was his most consistent, but his relationship with the club became complicated the following year when he requested a clearance to captain-coach Mortlake. St Kilda refused the transfer, forcing Gainger to remain in the VFL against his preferred plans, and his senior opportunities subsequently dwindled over the next two seasons. After struggling to regain a regular spot in the starting 18, he eventually departed the league in 1937 to join Sandringham in the VFA.
