Bio
Recruited from Camperdown as the Hampden League's premier centre half-back, Harold Maskell was a rugged defender whose VFL journey was defined by physical intensity and frequent transfers. After initiating his career at Geelong in 1932, he spent two seasons at Carlton where he established a reputation as an enforcer, notably facing the tribunal following a heavy clash with Collingwood rover Norm Le Brun. Maskell switched to Hawthorn midway through the 1935 season to play out the remainder of his 28-game career, unable to fully cement a long-term spot at senior level. His on-field toughness was a precursor to his post-football life, where he volunteered for active service and fought as a member of an elite Commando unit in New Guinea during the Second World War.
