Harold Traynor holds a unique and enduring place in the history of the South Melbourne Football Club, defined by a career that began with record-breaking promise and ended in wartime tragedy. Debuting against Collingwood in 1939 at just 16 years and 223 days of age, the diminutive teenager remains the youngest player to ever debut for the Swans, a record that has stood for over 80 years. Standing at just 173cm, he was a lightly built but talented footballer who managed to hold his own against hardened senior bodies, playing 37 games and booting 16 goals during the tumultuous early years of the Second World War. His football journey was cut short in 1942 when he enlisted for military service, where he subsequently suffered severe wounds that prevented him from ever returning to the VFL level. While his time in the red and white was brief, Traynor’s legacy is preserved as the youngest Swan to ever take the field.
