Bio
Recruited from Murrumbeena, William "Harry" Bruce arrived at Melbourne with a reputation for bravery that far exceeded the football field, having been awarded the Military Medal for gallantry while serving with the 3rd Light Horse Signal Troop in World War I. A small rover who worked his way up through the Seconds, he broke into the senior side in 1921 for a brief seven-game stint that curiously began with consecutive drawn matches. Despite his dogged efforts, he was unable to hold a regular spot in the starting 18 and transferred to VFA club Hawthorn midway through the 1922 season. Bruce later became a fixture in local football, captaining Caulfield and serving as president of the Hawthorn Seconds, before returning to uniform to serve his country again during the Second World War.
