Bio
Originally a South Melbourne local, Harry Harley spent time working for the railways in the country town of Woomelang before joining the police force and signing with Melbourne in 1938. Although South Melbourne had hoped to secure the services of their local product, the ruckman found a home at the Demons, where he quickly established himself as a solid contributor. Harley played 14 games during the club's dominant 1939 campaign, playing a key role in their rise to the top of the ladder, though he was unfortunate to miss selection in the premiership team that defeated Collingwood in the Grand Final. His VFL career ended under unusual circumstances the following year when he crossed to VFA side Camberwell; while Melbourne endorsed the move, he played without official VFL clearance, risking disqualification to continue his career in the rival competition.
