Bio
Recruited from Wesley College, Harry Hughes was already a familiar face at the Melbourne Football Club, having featured in the club's VFA defensive unit since 1894. Despite his football pedigree, Hughes spent the majority of the inaugural 1897 VFL season unavailable for selection, choosing instead to focus his athletic energies on competitive rowing. He eventually made a dramatic return late in the year, parachuting directly into the side for the inaugural round-robin finals series. Hughes played his only two VFL matches as a defender in high-stakes losses against Essendon and Geelong before his brief League career concluded.
