Bio
Originally hailing from Nagambie and recruited via Clifton Hill Juniors, Harry Matheson was a journeyman forward and wingman whose footballing life was defined by persistence and service. He debuted as an 18-year-old for St Kilda but endured a winless start to his career before crossing to Carlton, where he struggled to cement a spot in the senior side over two seasons. After a year out of the league playing for the Swan Island Engineers, Matheson found a lifeline at Collingwood in 1914, showing promise in a new role before the outbreak of World War I abruptly ended his VFL tenure. His standing in the game is largely tied to his status as one of Collingwood's original Anzacs; he served with distinction at Gallipoli and in France, and is credited with captaining the first Australian Rules team to win a match in Egypt, though his service was cut short by shell shock in 1916.
